Discover legit ways to make money online in your spare time, from paid apps and small tasks to selling photos and earning rewards while playing games.
A phone, a bit of free time, and some consistency can go a surprisingly long way. These days, there are legitimate platforms that pay users for simple online and app-based tasks such as taking photos in shops, checking stock, completing small research jobs, or even uploading original images for sale.
You should not expect instant riches, but many of these opportunities can be useful for building a modest extra income over time. Small payments may not seem exciting at first, yet when combined across several platforms, they can add up nicely over the course of a year.
Before jumping into online earning sites and apps, it helps to go in with the right expectations.
Cash out as soon as you can
Money sitting inside reward platforms is not protected in the same way as funds in a bank account. If a company closes or runs into trouble, you may lose anything left in your balance. That is why it is usually smarter to withdraw your earnings once you reach the payment threshold.
Use a separate email address
A dedicated email account makes it much easier to stay organised. Many of these apps send alerts when new paid tasks become available, and having those messages in one inbox saves time and keeps your main email from getting cluttered.
Be patient with small earnings
These platforms are best seen as a side income rather than fast cash. Some take time to build up to a withdrawal amount, and quitting too early can mean you put in effort without ever receiving a payout. A little patience often makes the difference.
Spend gift cards quickly
If a site offers cash or vouchers, cash is usually the more flexible option. But if you do receive gift cards, it is wise to use them sooner rather than later. That reduces the risk of forgetting about them, losing them, or being stuck with an expired or invalid voucher.
Keep tax in mind
For many users, occasional small earnings will not create a tax issue. However, if you begin making larger amounts or already earn money through self-employment, you may need to declare it.
In the UK, the trading allowance means you can earn up to £1,000 from self-employment or profit-making side activities before needing to report it. Once you go over that amount, or if your combined side-income exceeds the threshold, you may need to register for Self Assessment and report it to HMRC.
Stay alert for fake celebrity ads
Scam adverts often promise easy online income and may misuse the names of well-known personalities to look trustworthy. Be especially careful with ads claiming endorsements for crypto schemes, investment platforms, or “secret” money-making systems. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
One of the easiest ways to earn online is through mobile apps that connect companies with people willing to complete small jobs nearby. These are usually short tasks linked to market research or retail checks.
Roamler is a mobile app that pays users for carrying out quick research tasks for brands and businesses. Jobs can include counting stock on shelves, taking pictures of menus, or checking how a drink is served in a pub or restaurant.
Most tasks are short and typically take between five and 20 minutes. Payment often lands around £5 per task, though some can be lower and others pay significantly more depending on the complexity.
This platform works well for smartphone users who are often out and about. There is no minimum payout requirement, although withdrawal fees can apply depending on whether you choose PayPal or bank transfer.
Shepper focuses on short field jobs for major brands and retailers. These tasks might involve checking a billboard, confirming whether a product is available in a store, or reviewing how something is displayed.
The pay usually ranges from around £2.50 to £20 per task, though some assignments can be worth more. Users in larger towns and cities may see more opportunities, but the app can still be useful in smaller areas.
To get started, users need to complete an application and verify their identity. Payments are made by bank transfer, and lower withdrawals may include a small fee.
Field Agent sends out brief jobs to users who can visit stores, inspect prices, photograph products, or give feedback about what they find. The jobs are usually straightforward and can be completed fairly quickly.
Typical payouts sit somewhere between £3 and £10, with many tasks paying about £4.50. Sometimes users are asked to buy an item and are then reimbursed in addition to being paid for the task itself.
Because new jobs can disappear quickly, it helps to check the app often and claim work as soon as it appears.
BeMyEye also pays users to complete in-store checks and light market research using their phone. One task may involve snapping shelf displays, while another could involve asking a few questions to a store manager.
Payouts generally fall between £3 and £10 depending on how easy or time-consuming the task is. Some jobs are over in a few minutes, while others require more interaction and can take longer.
One thing to keep in mind is that some users have reported delayed payments. While many still receive funds without problems, this is worth considering before relying on it too heavily. If a task requires you to buy something first, it is important to keep your receipt so you can claim the expense back.
If you take strong, high-quality photos, stock photography platforms can give you a way to earn from images you have already created. Designers, publishers, and media outlets use these websites to buy pictures for commercial and editorial purposes.
This method is not guaranteed to produce regular income, but good images can continue generating earnings over time.
Alamy
Alamy can be appealing for photographers because the average selling price is relatively high compared with some other stock-photo sites. Contributors receive a share of each sale, and students may be eligible for better terms. Payment is available once the minimum balance is reached.
Adobe Stock
Adobe Stock is easy to recognise and is widely used by creatives. Individual photo earnings are often smaller, but it can still be worthwhile if you upload consistently and build a large portfolio.
Shutterstock
Shutterstock is one of the biggest names in stock photography. New contributors may start on lower commissions, but earnings can improve as sales increase over the year.
There are a few rules that matter no matter which stock site you choose.
Quality standards are high
Blurry, poorly lit, or badly composed images are unlikely to be accepted. A decent camera or a very strong smartphone camera can help, but image quality still matters a lot.
Commercial use may require permission
If your photo includes a person, private property, or recognisable branding, you may need a release form for commercial use. Editorial use is often more flexible, but every platform has its own requirements.
Think about control and rights
Always check the terms before uploading. Some photographers prefer to keep tighter control over where and how their images are used, so it is worth understanding the licensing rules in advance.
Another unusual option is reporting derelict or empty properties through YouSpotProperty.com. If you are the first person to submit a qualifying property in England, or in some parts of Wales, you may receive a £20 voucher for Amazon or Marks & Spencer.
The bigger reward comes if the company behind the platform later buys the property. In that case, the person who reported it can receive 1% of the purchase price, up to a maximum of £10,000.
How the process works
If you spot a property that appears abandoned or neglected, you can submit the address and any helpful photos through the website. The property must meet the company’s criteria, which can include being privately owned, not currently listed for sale, and not recently linked to planning activity.
If your report qualifies and you were first to submit it, the voucher is usually sent within about a month. The larger reward is far less predictable because property deals can take a long time to complete. In some cases it may happen quickly, but in others it could take months or even years.
These opportunities are genuine, but they work best when approached realistically. Most people will not replace a full-time income with task apps or stock-photo uploads alone. What they can do, though, is help you bring in extra money during time that might otherwise be spent scrolling aimlessly.
For some users, the best approach is to mix several methods together. A few retail-checking apps, occasional stock-photo sales, and niche opportunities like property spotting can create a broader stream of small earnings that becomes more meaningful over time.
Playtime - Best Ways to Make Money makes gaming more rewarding by letting users earn money while they play. Instead of playing just for fun, users get the added benefit of turning their time into something valuable.
This gives people a stronger reason to return to the platform. When users know they can enjoy games and earn rewards at the same time, they are more likely to come back regularly and stay engaged for longer.
